African Safari Adventures in the Serengeti
The Serengeti Plains of east Africa host one of the last bastions of the old Africa and encompass an area of 12,000 square miles in northeastern Tanzania and southwestern Kenya. The Serengeti is a place of vast grasslands, rocky outcroppings, high, forested hills and isolated woodlands and is home to the largest animal migration on the planet that is considered one of the natural wonders of the world.
The Serengeti is the homeland to the Maasai, a warlike tribe that used to hunt lions with spears for fun and have lived for centuries off their cattle herds. In the 1970s and 80s, animal populations were greatly reduced by poachers but have significantly recovered. Nearly 80 per cent of the Serengeti is protected as National Parks, conservation areas and game reserves.
Modern safaris depart from several areas in both Kenya and Tanzania, are conducted with four-wheel drive vehicles and accommodations can be luxury safari lodges or well appointed tent camps. With either choice, prepare to be pampered with fine meals and friendly staff. A Serengeti safari will leave you with a different perspective on life after having lived among lions, antelope, wildebeest, elephant and some of the greatest scenery on earth.
