Adventure Whitewater Rafting at Victoria Falls

Posted in by admin on the September 3rd, 2011

Few other places have the kind of wilderness found in Africa. The plants, animals, and terrain of the continent are more extreme than anywhere else. The ruggedness of the continent extends to its rivers, as well. Africa has relatively few rivers, but makes up for this deficit with beauty and excitement in each of them.
The prime example of a river that delivers adventure and wonder is the Zambezi river. As the river flows down to the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, it transforms into Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
With these falls as a starting point, the river provides an opportunity for white water rafting that can’t be found anywhere else.
White water trips take place along the stretch of the river between Victoria Falls and Lake Kariba. With their massive flow of water over a 5,600 foot span, the falls set the mood for the entire experience. The water spills over the falls with such force that they occasionally send a back spray into the sky up to 1,300 feet.
The rafting trips can cover part or all of the rapids, but the prime rafting season runs from August to January. The late summer to early winter period is when the river has relatively little water, letting the rock-strewn river bottom roil the waters.
During the rainy season, especially in May and June, the higher water levels make parts of the river too hazardous to navigate. Even very experienced rafters won’t tempt fate on the river nearest the falls at this time.
The speed at which the Zambezi flows make the rafting trip a quick but intense journey that can be completed in a day’s time. What makes this rafting voyage special is the breathtaking views and further adventures that await when the rafting ends.
